Pay Per Click (PPC) is what made
Google famous wealthy and it can do the same for you.
But, first, a little terminology so you can thoroughly
understand this sometimes arcane topic:
What is PPC?
PPC is the process of paying search engines to place your
advertisements on either search results pages or third-party
pages that the search engines deem to be relevant to your
ad.

While many argue that PPC arose only as a source of
revenue, such is not true. The original genesis of PPC
was the inherent failure of all search engines to return
relevant results for a particular search. Thus, PPC
began as customer-driven and not vendor-driven and remains
so today. For example, as discussed below, Google
(particularly among all search engines) seeks ads linking to
relevant pages and gives ample rewards for heightened
relevancy.
To properly begin a PPC campaign requires significant
planning and preparation. Included in this process is
the investigation of your target market's search behavior,
your website's ability to convert click-throughs into
patients and drafting of the ads.
Relevancy - the Holy Grail
of PPC
A couple of illustrations of how a PPC campaign may start
are illustrative:
Case One: A cosmetic surgeon prepares a
PPC campaign for, say, rhinoplasty and selects as
the target a pre-existing page on his site that has
a discussion of of all of the surgeon's experience,
some data about his education and a photo of his
lovely family. All of this is relevant to the
surgeon in his belief and, in fact, is presented to
convince a potential patient he is the one who
should be hired.
Case Two: A second cosmetic surgeon
prepares a PPC campaign for rhinoplasty and prepares
a new page dedicated to the subject of rhinoplasty
along with techniques certain to capture potential
patients' attention and acquire contact data from
them. While links are on the page about the
doctor's education and lovely family, the thrust is
to convince the potential patient that rhinoplasty
is this surgeon's forte!
The first case results in no
leads at expensive cost-per-clicks because there is little,
or no, relevance between the subject of the ad - rhinoplasty
- and the target page.
The second case results in a
target page that is highly-tuned to provide the exact data
the potential client seeks in tandem with foolproof methods
for the surgeon to acquire contact data so that follow-through
can be accomplished.
The highly-targeted, relevant
Case Two will yield much higher as placement on all search
engines - especially Google - and will get lower-cost clicks
at the same time because "relevance" counts!
